Membee’s Member Login Without Third-Party Cookies
Membee’s member login is now enhanced and tested to use first-party cookies so that it will no longer rely on third-party cookies. To further understand how login currently works and what cookies are, we have included more details at the end of this announcement.
In summary, first-party cookies allow the browser to see that Membee’s features (online member profile, event registration, etc) are hosted and stored on your website, keeping visitor data and user behavior secured to your website. You can learn more about first-party and third-party cookies here.
Note: if your members block all cookies, it will prevent them from maintaining login on any website.
Peer-Tested & Approved
Some organizations already have their member login upgraded following the same steps above.
Thank you to all the organizations that assisted us in this process!
I’ve completed the setup and I did a test. Everything seems to be working properly. For example, prior to this upgrade, if I tried to register as a member for an event on my iPhone, I would get the third-party cookie error when attempting to log in, however, now with the upgrade, I am able to log in just fine on my iPhone. Thank you for all your help!
What Are Cookies & What’s Changing?
Globally, cookies are used to help improve the user experience by authenticating and maintaining login. Even your bank uses cookies.
While there are many types of cookies, third-party cookies are used by content on your website that is created by a different domain or server and implemented by adding scripts to your website, like Membee’s events or directory widgets as examples. This integration method has been an industry standard for many years globally – so much so that 75% of the market share relies on third-party cookies worldwide!
As technology evolves, third-party cookies started to be used to track user behavior and personalize advertisements. Major browsers made the pivotal decision to phase out the use of third-party cookies to improve user privacy.
Some browsers have already disabled third-party cookies by default and implemented enhanced protection features built into the browser.
See these announcements from Firefox, Safari, and Google:
- Mozilla Firefox disables cross-site tracking cookies for all users by default
- Safari blocks third-party cookies and cross-site tracking
- Google announces its plan to make third-party cookies obsolete
More recently, Google announced that they are beginning to deprecate third-party cookies by restricting 1% of its global user base, about 30 million people, with a goal to restrict all users in the second half of 2024. This impacts not only Membee but 75% of the global market share.
